Best Brake Controller for a Pre-August 2021 Ford F-150 with Factory 7-Way

Question:

I've looked at all of the information you guys have for installing a brake controller on my 2021 Ford F-150. I have the factory tow package with the 7-Way wiring and I think I found a connector under the dash with provisions for a brake controller but it doesn't look like it matches the 22292 adapter that is stated to work with the 2021 F-150. I think I have a model built before the August 2021 date so I'm stuck on what to do. Can I use the wiring that I found and just splice it with the wiring on a brake controller? What are your thoughts on the Curt Echo wireless controller?

Thank you for reaching out and for all of the information!

If you're unable to find the connector for a brake controller under the dash or behind a panel for your 2021 Ford F-150 with the factory tow package then you probably do have a model that was built prior to August 2021 (you should be able to check this with your VIN or a sticker on your door jamb).

According to our information you won't have provisions for a brake controller under your dash anywhere but if you can test the wiring for the following functions then you can potentially splice in a brake controller:

Blue - 7-Way Output to Trailer
Black - 12V Power
White - Ground
Red - COLD Side of Stop Light Switch (only gets hot when brake pedal is pressed)

If you find that these functions are present on that wiring then I recommend going with the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195 because it has an LCD screen that is easy to read and make adjustments plus you can make different presets for various trailering setups.

The Curt Echo is a solid choice for a brake controller. For your application I recommend going with the Curt Echo In-Line Wireless # C79DR because it simply tees in behind your factory 7-Way and then you can make your adjustments with the app on your phone. I like this over the original Echo # C51180 because the In-Line can be hidden under your truck whereas the original is something you need to remember to grab for towing as well as remove when you're done towing.

The In-Line will actually be less of a hassle to install than the P3 as well so I actually recommend going with it over anything else for your application due to the easy install and the fact that you're saving space inside your truck cab.

I hope this all helps you out!
