Trailer Brakes and Hubs For Adding Electric Trailer Brakes To a Dump Trailer With 2-3/8" Axle Tubes

Question:

Hey, I recently acquired a dump trailer with dual 3500# axles. I couldn’t find a tag on them, but they had 2.375” tubes on them, so I’m assuming they are 3500#. The issue I’m having is, the axles are shortened, and the tires Rest under the bed, so they have 10” wheels on them and not any room for larger wheels. The trailer didn’t come with a title, so I’m going to need to put axle brakes on it to get it titled. Is there an electric brake kit that fits under a 10” wheel? If not, what’s the smallest wheel size I can replace them with, that can fit electric brakes under it. Thank you for any help

If you do indeed have a 3,500lb axle it will use a 10" Brake Kit # AKEBRK-35-SA per axle on your dump trailer. It is best to remove one of your hubs as this will allow you to measure for the bearings and grease seal and be able to verify you have a Brake Flange # 4-35 for the brake assemblies to mount. A 3,500lb axle will have a Grease Seal # 58846(ID 1.719" / OD 2.565"), Inner Bearing # L68149(ID 1.378") and Outer Bearing # L44649(ID 1.063"). If this matches what you have you will need 4 of the Easy Grease Trailer Hub and Drum Assemblies # AKHD-545-35-EZ-K to work with the 10" Brake assemblies.

The Kenda Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire with 13" Black Mod Wheel # AM31990 is the smallest wheel and tire combination that will fit with the 10" brakes. This will have an overall diameter of 24.1" and a width of 7". If your trailer needs a lift to fit the larger tires we do have the Dexter Trailer Springs Over-Under Conversion Kit # K71-384-00 that will allow you move your axle to be mounted below your leaf springs if it is currently on top. You will need 2 of these kits for both your axles. Otherwise we do have the Correct Track Trailer Alignment and Lift Kit # RR23QX that will allow you to lift the trailer 1-1/4" or 2-1/4" depending on what is required to fit the larger wheels and tires.

Finally we do have entire 3,500lb axle assemblies that you could replace to get them the correct length since you mentioned they were shortened. This Straight Axle # e52SR is complete with brakes and hubs with a 95" hub face and 80" spring center. We also have a 4" Drop Axle # e45SR with the same dimensions and also includes the brakes with hubs.
