Fuse and Circuit Breaker Installation Help For Dexter Predator Brake Controller in 2008 GMC Sierra
Question:
I am installing a predator DX2 brake controller in a 2008 GMC Sierra , which has a factory tow package. I have a two part question for this controller installation. !- Existing in my power distribution box is a 30A fuse for the controller power M6 stud and the predators install guide says a 25a self resetting circuit breaker is required. Do I leave the 30a fuse and install a 25a circuit breaker inline under the dash? is there a self resetting circuit breaker built in the factory setup? 2 - The predators install guide also requires a 20a inline fuse to be installed on the stoplight switch wire. Is this fuse already part of the factory setup or do I install it under dash? I watched your videos of break controller install and didnt see these fuses or circuit breakers mentioned. Please enlighten me.

When installing the Dexter Predator Brake Controller # 58-8 in your 2008 GMC Sierra you will want to follow the Dexter instructions and install the specified fuse and self-resetting circuit breaker as indicated.
The vehicle manufacturer installs fuses to protect the OEM electrical components in the vehicle so any aftermarket accessory that is added will need to be protected independently of the factory fuses and circuit breakers.
To correctly install the Dexter Predator you will leave the 30 amp fuse that is currently installed on your Sierra alone and install the required 25-amp self-resetting circuit breaker on the black power wire as close to the brake controller as possible. The black power wire is then connected to the positive (+) terminal of the battery.
You will also need to install the required 20-amp inline fuse on the stoplight switch wire. The red wire in the Predator kit with the 20 amp fuse connects to the cold (non-powered) side of your brake switch.
Not all brake controllers require additional fuses and/or circuit breakers; this requirement is brake controller dependent. We make our videos following the manufacturers installation instructions and only with the items that come in the kit.
I have attached a FAQ article covering a Draw-Tite 5220 brake controller installation on a 2008 GMC Sierra. Although it is a different controller the basic installation process is similar.
