I plan on flat towing a 2018 Equinox behind a 2016 Newmar Dutch Star......do I really need a SBS?

Yes, all states require a flat towed vehicle to have a supplemental braking system installed. For your 2018 Chevy Equinox I recommend a Demco SBS. There are two different Demco SBS Supplemental Braking Systems, the Stay-IN-Play item # SM99251 and the Air Force item # SM99243. The Stay-IN-Play is for motorhomes with hydraulic brakes and the Air Force is for motorhomes with air brakes.

This system permanently installs and will not be in the way when you are driving your Equinox. The operating unit and actuating cylinder stay hidden so everything is out of your way when you are driving.
