Should a Hitch Ball Be Replaced if it Was Overtightened When Installed?
Question:
I installed a 2inch trailer ball with a 1inch shank and mistakenly torqued the nut to 450 lb/ft instead of the recommended 250 lb/ft. Have I weakened the shank by over torqueing the nut? Is it still safe to use if I back it of to the specified 250 lb/ft, or should I throw it away?

Expert Reply:
I recommend replacing the 2" Hitch Ball # 63845 if it was over torqued. By overtightening the ball you may have added microscopic cracks inside the steel that will lead to a failure in the future.
