How to Add Equalizer Upgrade to Older Trailer with Straight Equalizer

Question:

I have a 1968 Ken-craft tandem-axle camper and was considering upgrading the equalizers in the leaf spring suspension. However, my old equalizers have the mounting hole in line with the shackle mounts, not in a triangle configuration like current trailers, so the Road Armor or Morryde units wont work without cutting the tab off the frame and welding on a shorter one, which Id rather not do. My equalizer mount hole is about 4 1/2 inches below the frame, and the holes for the shackles are about 5 1/2 inches apart both measurements center-to-center. I have a picture, but I dont see an attachment function on this form. Any suggestions?

The straight equalizers, like the 5-1/2" Long # TREQR2 it sounds you have, don't really have any upgrade options available as those aren't as common as the triangular versions you were talking about.

In order to upgrade the suspension on your trailer you could either install a new hanger kit or you could use the outer mounting brackets for the Correct Track Trailer Alignment and Lift Kit # RR23QX to lower those by 2-1/4" so you can then use the Equa-Flex Cushioned Equalizers # LC279687. At this point though I would rather just pursue the hangers as it would be much more cost-effective to go that route.

Attached is a video for you to check out.
