Can The HappiJac Manual-To-Electric Conversion Kit Be Used On Shore Power Instead Of Battery Power?

Question:

Hi! Ive read through all of your FAQs here and this is a special challenge for your awesome support team at etrailer! My husband is an engineer, but mechanical and not electrical...the camper is not pre-wired for this. We want to upgrade our Happijac legs on an older Northstar truck camper BUT we want to be able to do it via shore power, not tied into the battery on board. The reason is that we have heard that on these aftermarket conversions, sometimes the voltage can get boggy or inconsistent and may not deliver the seemless up/down experience were looking for with the electrified jacks. Have you heard of customers having voltage issues when using on a battery? My camper repair guy who will help us install these said hes seen that be an issue, thus were wondering how can we wire it so that its tied to shore power which well always have around whenever we want to use the electric legs. Anyone ever asked this one, or is someone there up for the challenge? Thanks! We love etrailer and always shop you guys first!

I spoke with HappiJac, and they said that the electric motors in the:

-Manual-to-Electric Conversion Kit for HappiJac Truck Camper Jack Systems # LC733960-182524 are 12VDC and are not rated for AC power.

He went on to mention that even if you used a stand-alone converter, you will be limited by the output of the converter. It's not so much the voltage, but the amperage rating.

Assuming that you are wanting to operate all 4 jacks, you would need at least 60 amps of output from your converter. It could be done technically, however a well maintained, healthy, deep-cycle 12VDC battery is all the motors are designed to work with.
