Tongue Weight of Boat Trailer

Question:

Why is there such a wide range of direction given to boat trailer tongue weights? Some say, 10-15 of GTW, others say 5-7 5 for double axle, 6 for single axle.

If I follow your question correctly, you are asking about Tongue Weight, TW and how this varies for boat trailers? This is because of boats having the heavier part of their whole, the engine, at the rear. The larger the engine the greater the weight. When loaded on a trailer this can be compensated for by where the axles are placed on specific boat trailer, but only to a certain degree. There is not a hard and fast rule that it must be a certain value, but a good rule of thumb is that TW is about 10-12 percent of total weight and 15 percent at max for a properly loaded trailer. Ultimately, the goal is to have whatever you are towing be done so safely. No sway, no tail wagging the dog effect.
