Is It Safe To Tow My 5th Wheel That Has A Higher Pin Weight Than My Trucks Payload Capacity?

Question:

I have 2017 2500 diesel Ram 4.by 4 short box . Specs say my payload is 2380 and the pin weigh of my 5 th wheel Dutchmen model 3650FFL is 12040 lbs and pin weigh is 2430 . AM I OVERWEIGHT FOR AXLE. I’ve towed it home from dealership where salesman told me I was perfectly fine.. after doing more research I think I’m over weigh all ready. The truck just plays with it hauling the trailer but I want to be safe than sorry. If you can help me. Thank you

Great question!

The payload capacity for your 2017 Ram 2500 refers to the total amount of weight the truck bed can carry safely, which as you mentioned is 2,380lbs.

This may seem alarming since the pin weight on your Dutchman 3650FFL is 2,430lbs, however, the payload on your truck is supported by a thin piece of metal usually, where your pin weight capacity does not use this as support and bolts directly to your trucks frame.

With that being said, you are currently overloaded as the payload cannot be lower than the pin weight.
