Excessive Noise From Weight Distribution System With Sway Control

Question:

Hi, Just installed Pro Series Weight Distribution System w Friction Sway Control - Round - 10,000 lbs GTW, 1,000 lbs TW on my 2003 Dodge Ram 2500 Quad Cab 4X4 short bed and 1996 Fleetwood Prowler 23LV. I need about another inch and a half on the hitch bar to level the trailer - which bar would you recommend? When I turn, the friction sway control bar makes a grinding/binding noise. How do I fix this?

For your weight distribution system, I would recommend the Curt Weight Distribution Shank, part # 17120. This shank fits 2 inch receivers and allows you to make adjustments from a maximum 5-5/8 inch drop to a maximum 8-7/8 inch rise.

Concerning the noise on your system. You will experience some noise with a friction sway control system. If you feel it is excessive, it could be caused from the sway control being too tight. The handle will only turn the sway control on or off, and should be tightened until it is in a level position. The bolt under the handle allows you to adjust the tension. If there is too much tension, it increases the friction and could cause more noise. You should do a series of road tests. Adjust the tension by 1/4 turn in either direction until the desired degree of sway control is achieved.

Also, the instructions state that the center of the ball on the sway control ball/plate assembly should be 24 inches from the center of the hitch ball when the trailer is connected. If it is positioned at a different length, this could be causing the problem by putting additional stress on the unit. I have linked you to an installation video for sway control.
