Why Is Rain Infiltrating My Thule Force XL 625?

Question:

We just got our Force XL 625 and were driving in a very light rain for about 10 miles, checked it when we got home out of curiosity and we had 6 s of water inside the front of the carrier. Is there supposed to be a rubber seal or something in there, because ours has nothing. We had someone else install it and I want to make sure it was not left out.

I just looked up the specs for the discontinued Thule Force XL 625, and Thule's owner's manual does not list a seal on the included parts list with the box. With that being said, if the rain was extremely heavy, it is possible that rain can seep into the box because cargo boxes are not 100% waterproof.

One important thing to note is that most cargo boxes like the Force XL 625 have an upper lid with a lip that extends over the bottom half. This creates a barrier for the water to drip off the sides of the lip in order not to in run straight into the bottom half. It is important to make sure that the lip completely goes over the bottom of the carrier. It is also important to make sure that no part of the lip is bent or cracked. This can cause water infiltration as well.
