Replacing a 5-Pin Trailer Connector on a Trailer with Separate Brake Light and Turn Signal Circuits

Question:

truck has 4-pin flat and 7-pin round connections trailer has 5 -pin round connection. Trailer does not have brakes, but does have separate brake, turn, and running light wiring. Can I replace the round trailer connection with a flat 5-pin connection, then use an adapter from the truck 7-pin to the new trailer 5-pin? Can not find an adapter from 7-pin to round 5-pin

You can replace the round 5-pin trailer connector on your trailer with a 5-pin flat trailer connector like part # HM47910, but I would recommend replacing the existing connector with a 7-pin round trailer connector like the Pollack 7-Pole Trailer End Connector, # PK12706 or a 4-pin flat connector like part # HM48110. Since the trailer does not have brakes, there is really no need to keep using a 5-pin connector. You would also not have to purchase or use an additional adapter and you could connect the wires on your trailer directly to the 7-pin connector without having to splice any wires together.

I have attached a wiring FAQ for you to check out that explains typical trailer wiring for you to check out. Typically, trailers use a combined wire system with the brake light and turn signals on the same circuit. The trailer connectors on your truck

All of the trailer connectors that we offer are designed for 2 wire systems. This is probably the case with the trailer connectors on your vehicle as well. To convert the separate brake and turn signal wires on your trailer to combined wiring, you will also want to install the tail light converter, # 118158. To install this converter, you will attach the right turn wire from your trailer to the green wire on the output side of the converter, the left turn wire to the yellow wire and the brake light wire to the red wire. You will then run the green, yellow and white wires from the input side of the converter box to the new 7-pin or 5-pin trailer connector that you install.
