Recommended Tow Bar for Blue Ox Base Plates and Braking Solution for 2022 GMC Canyon

Question:

Just purchased the Blue Ox Base Plate Kit here - Item # BLU93FR. Hopefully it will be arriving next week. Ive watched the e-trailer install videos for the base plate on a 2021 Chevy Colorado, and it seems to be well within my mechanical capabilities. I would like recommendation/suggestions for best Tow Bar. We are pulling a 2022 GMC Canyon 4WD behind our brand new 2022 Tiffin Allegro 32SA. The coach has the new Ford F53 7.3 liter V8. Ive seen some in the Tiffin newsgroups that recommend some number of inches on the hitch, others say we would need some number of inches rise. Neither of those make sense. Any insights or recommendations from the experts would be most appreciated. For this configuration of tow vehicle and RV, what would the experts recommend for a brake controller. Ive seen the videos and reviews for the proportional Brake Buddy 3 Portable Supplemental Braking System and the Blue Ox Patriot Brake System. It seems the prices on each are comparable. We favor ease of setup and safety over price, but within reason. We tend to move about a bit with many short stays, then staying at home for a while, then repeating. With that, seems the permanent install solution did not seem to fit our operation. Any insights or recommendations from the experts would be most appreciated. many thanks for the assist.

The Blue Ox Base Plate Kit, # BLU93FR is confirmed to fit the 2022 GMC Canyon. For a compatible tow bar, I suggest the Blue Ox Avail Non-Binding Tow Bar, # BX7420. Please note the linked product review video below. You will notice in the video that there is a high/low adapter in use with the tow bar. This is used to provide the needed adjustment of setting the tow bar within +/- 3" of level. This is done to minimize excessive wear on tires and suspension components. I've included a linked help article on this too.

For supplemental braking you identify two separate portable units, each are very good systems and very comparable, they are simply provide by two different brands. In keeping with the Blue Ox brand of base plates and tow bar, I suggest the Blue Ox Patriot Portable Braking System, # BLU37TR. But because you state you prefer the ease of set up and move around a lot, I think you would be better served with a fixed installation. the Demco SBS Stay-IN-Play DUO # SM99251. This system is made in the USA and gives you automatic, proportional braking with a system that never has to be removed, replaced, or reset. The DUO activates when your RV's brake lights go on and an inertia sensor in the towed car detects deceleration so you get no false braking.

You will also need Tow Bar wiring, this is to tie your indicator lights from your motorhome to your Colorado. I recommend the Roadmaster Universal Hy-Power Diode Wiring Kit, # RM-154. You will also want the Roadmaster Automatic Battery Disconnect # RM-766 as this will conveniently disconnect your battery so that your Chevrolet Colorado can be flat towed per manufacturer instructions.
