Maximum Weight Capacity For a Cargo Carrier When Using an Adapter For Additional Ground Clearance

Question:

Expert Reply: “Any type of hitch adapter or extender will have the unavoidable side-effect of causing a loss of about half of your hitchs rated capacity, both its tongue weight TW and its gross towing weight GTW.” Adam R Question: Does this mean that a 300 pound capacity hitch cargo carrier — elevated up by adapter for better ground clearance — should only hold 150 pounds? Thank you.

If you are planning to use an adapter like the Roadmaster High-Low Adapter # RM-070 to raise a Cargo Carrier # C18110, the adapter will reduce the capacity of the receiver on your vehicle 50%. So if your receiver on your vehicle is rated for 500lbs of tongue weight it would be reduced by 50%, but the adapter itself has a maximum tongue weight capacity of 200lbs. So with the Cargo Carrier # C18110 weight of 30lbs that will limit you to 170lbs of cargo on the carrier.

The Roadmaster High-Low Adapter # RM-048-4 has a higher tongue weight rating of 400lbs so in the same scenario above it would reduce tongue weight to 250lbs allowing for cargo up to 220lbs with the same 30lb cargo carrier.
