the body of my trailer protrudes approx 6inch over the bumper only approx 1/4inch clearance above bumper, can I use this carrier or do I have to use hitch?

I have a solution for you to transport your generator. I reached out to my contact at Mount-N-Lock, and he confirmed that the bumper's receded mounting point of 6 inches from the end of the trailer will not allow you to install the GennyGo Generator and Cargo Carrier for RV Bumpers # MNT34FR. This is because it will most likely interfere with the railing on the platform.

With that being said, the best bet is to use your hitch. Since all hitch-mounted generator carriers do not have the shank length required to clear the rear of your motorhome, I recommend the 24x48 Lets Go Aero BigBoss Cargo Carrier for 2" Hitches # H01465. The Boss Hog measures 7-1/2 inches from the center of the shank's pinhole to the closest edge of the carrier, so it will provide you with the clearance you need. In addition, the BigBoss carrier is approved to withstand the exerted force when mounted on your 2021 Forest River Columbus Fifth-Wheel trailer. If you need dimensions to make sure your generator fits, the inside dimensions of the BigBoss measure 48" wide x 24" long.

For extra theft deterrence, I recommend the hitch lock # ACC3250. If you need straps to secure the carrier, ratcheting straps like the Erickson Ratchet Tie-Down Straps w/ Web Clamps and S-Hooks # EM31353.
