How to Carry Bikes in Truck Bed with Retrax XR Tonneau Cover Installed

Question:

I use a truck bed bike rack similar to the Swagman Fork Carrier product # S64702 with a 9 mm skewer combined with a variety of Yakima Thru axle Fork adapters 12 x 100 and 15 x 110 for different bikes. My GMC 1500 has a Retrax XR tonneau cover. As such, longer bikes require the tailgate to to be open. Im looking for solution where a 9 mm skewer fork mount similar to Rocky Mountain product RKY1095 can be attached to a cross bar similar to Rhino Rack RRVA165B such that bike front wheel is removed and the fork is secured ABOVE the tonneau cover canister allowing the bikes rear tire to rest in the bed with the tailgate closed. Sort of like using the Saris Trap Fork Block SATRK34 as the tonneau cross bar. Any suggestions? P.S.: I was hoping NOT to use a two crossbar system like the Yakima Roof Wheel Mount Y02114

I got you.

You can use the 65" Rhino-Rack Vortex Crossbar # RRVA165B with the Quick Mount Legs # RRRLT600H for a single crossbar on your Retrax XR tonneau cover or the kit # RRVA165B-RRRLT600 for 2 crossbars (if you ever think you'll need a second one in the future).

Once you have this in place you can use the RockyMounts LoBall Bike Rack # RKY1097 which mounts via the T-Slots in the Rhino-Rack crossbar so that the forks of your bike will be sitting above that tonneau cover canister so your bike will fit. You can use as many LoBall bike racks as you need - just as long as the bikes can physically still fit in the bed of your truck. Please note you'll need to trim down the bolts that come with this kit as they will be too long.
