2007 Toyota Tundra 4-pole to 7-Way Wiring Installation

Question:

My 2007 tundra came with just a 4 way flat connector. They tell me the plugs are up under the rear of the bed to plug in a 7 way trailer connector. Can you tell me which one to order?

Since your Tundra has a 4-way connector you can use a Universal Installation Kit # ETBC7 to convert your existing 4-way to a 7-way connection. Some vehicles are equipped with a T-One Connector that is very easy to use and you simply plug the connector into the existing wiring harness plugs on your vehicle and then you can establish a 7-Way connector. Currently for your 2007 Toyota Tundra we do not have a compatible fit for a T-One style connector and your vehicle.

The new 7-way will supply signal to the connection point at the rear of your truck for trailer brakes, trailer reverse lights, and an accessory 12V battery power, and these are in addition to the existing brake, and turn signals that are already supplied by your existing 4-way. To install this 7-way connector you will have to run some additional wires and tap into the vehicle existing wiring, especially to complete the installation of a brake controller. I have included a diagram that shows the wiring configuration for the installation of the # ETBC7.

To begin the installation of the # ETBC7 you will plug the supplied connector into your existing 4-way connector. It is recommended to use a little dielectric grease like # 11755, to protect the connection from moisture and dust. Then ground the white wire on the 7-way to an appropriate metal surface on your truck that is located near the 7-way mounting location.

The next step is to run the duplex wire from the 7-way connector up to to the front of the vehicle. This duplex wire contains the black 12V accessory wire and brake signal from the brake controller to the 7-way connector. When routing this wire make sure that you avoid hot areas like the exhaust, and moving parts such as the suspension.

The 12V accessory wire requires an in-line 40 amp fuse to be installed. After running the duplex wiring you will need to install the brake controller. Please check the specific installation instructions for your brake controller. If you need a brake controller I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 brake controller # 90885.

To install the brake controller it is helpful to use the circuit tester that is included with the # ETBC7 and identify the vehicle wiring associated with your brake controller. You will need to identify and connect the brake controller to the following functions on your vehicle: the red wire on the brake controller connects to the brake wire (stop signal), the black wire is connected to a vehicle power inlet (not the 12V that you ran for the # ETBC7), the white wire is the ground, and the the blue wire on the brake controller sends the brake signal to the 7-way connector using the white wire of the duplex wiring that you already ran to the back of the vehicle.

If the trailer that you are connecting to has reverse lights or reverse lockout (like on some boat trailers) you will need to use the same process of identifying the reverse light wire that is located at the rear of the vehicle, typically on the driver's side behind the rear axle, and connect the purple wire on the 7-way connection point to the reverse light.

The Hopkins # HM43397 that you referenced above is intended to connect to a factory installed existing 7-way connector on your truck. This wiring harness then re-reroutes that connection to the bed of your truck for 5th wheel or goose neck towing, while retaining the use of your factory installed 7-way connector. Since you do not have a factory installed 7-way this plug is not applicable.

I have included links to the parts listed above, a video of the # ETBC7 being installed on vehicle similar to yours, as well as a helpful link that explains the installation process for you.
