Chucking With the Curt Q24 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch

Question:

I own a Q24 hitch and with my fifth wheel hooked up, when I pull off or when I’m going to stop, the kingpin slides in the hitch. It really scares me and I need to know what or if I am doing something wrong. Thanks for your help!

It sounds like what is happening with your Curt Q24 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch, # C16545-16017 is known as chucking and it is not unusual. The concern is the degree of chucking that occurs, this movement/play within the contact point of your king pin being gripped by the jaws of your 5th wheel hitch should be checked out by a trusted RV tech. It is important that proper maintenance is performed at regular intervals, a digital copy of the manual is linked below. Please review and follow these points to ensure all items are properly greased and bolts are set to proper torques values. The chucking you are experiencing is not uncommon with the Q Series hitches and one of the influences of why they are replacing this hitch line with the A Series.

If you identify the chucking is to the point that you want to change the hitch, I suggest the B&W Companion OEM 5th Wheel Hitch for Ford Super Duty Prep Package, # BWRVK3305. The B&W hitches have the tightest and most secure head and jaws, this will eliminate what you are experiencing. What I like abut the B&W products are the 1" thick precision machined jaws that provide a 360-degree jaw-to-king-pin contact with tight tolerances. This translates to less rattle and greater security than many other options. They design their heads to be fully articulating and this makes it easier to hookup the RV and helps to minimize the chucking. In addition, to the great design and build quality of these hitches they are all made in USA of raw materials that are also sourced right here as well.
