Availability of 1-1/4 Inch Receiver for 2022 AWD VW Taos
Question:
Item # DT79GR 2022 AWD VW Taos From what I have read this is the only option at this time. Ordered one through U-Haul and went there today. The first issue was I dont want a 2inch receiver, just using it for bike carrier. Then I was told that the hitch would be behind my bumper cover and an opening cut through it. Both U-Haul and I decided to wait until a -down 1.25inch receiver is made. Just watched a U-Tube video from someone who out a Curt Item # C11412 on his 2022 Taos. Checking to see if that works only for the FWD and not the AWD. If it works for AWD, is easy to install on my own?

I found the video you spoke of.
Although the Curt # C11412 can apparently be successfully installed on a 2022 VW Taos, as you can see in the video once installed the receiver tube is so far under the vehicle that the gentleman who installed it had to use a 1-1/4 to 2 inch hitch adapter to move the receiver closer to the rear of the vehicle so he can install his bike rack. The rack wouldn't be able to be installed without the extension the adapter provided, and we don't offer a straight extension for a 1-1/4 inch hitch.
Using an adapter like # HTAD will lower the tongue weight capacity of the hitch by half, from 200 to 100 lbs, which means that the combined weight of your bikes and the rack you plan on using cannot exceed 100 lbs. In addition to that, using the adapter will provide a 2 inch receiver, which is incompatible with your bike rack.
To this, add the fact that the # C11412 hitch was not designed for or tested on that vehicle which could possibly lead to an unsafe situation. Because it wasn't test fit on that vehicle, Curt couldn't say if it would fit on an AWD vehicle.
Because of all this, we cannot recommend installing the Curt # C11412 hitch on your Taos. I'd recommend going with the Draw-Tite # DT79GR Class III hitch which will require trimming the bumper fascia so the hitch receiver can pass through it. To accommodate your 1-1/4 inch bike rack, you can use a hitch reducer like # HT02. Using a reducer will NOT decrease the capacity of the hitch. This will be a better, safer solution for carrying your bike.
