Pre-Collision Avoidance Error On 2017 Toyota Highlander with Trailer Brake Controller

Question:

I have the Tekonsha brake controller installed on my 2017 highlander and seem to be having the standard pre-collision warning issue. Is it possible that the electronics would heat up to the point of smoking without the diode installed? We have had a few random episodes where we start to smell and see some smoke yikes. Turn the car off immediately and it stops. Turn the car back on and smoking is gone. I am assuming the brake controller circuit is the issue with the possibility of a feedback issue causing the overheating. Appreciate the help!

The pre-collision avoidance error with an aftermarket brake controller like the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller part # 90195 installed on a 2017 Toyota Highlander is a known issue. It's caused by back feed on the stop light switch circuit from the brake controller which is the red wire coming from the back of the unit. In order to fix this you will simply need to install a 1 amp diode in-line on this circuit which you should be able to obtain locally from an electronics or audio supply store.

Please note, if you are seeing or smell smoke you will need to take your vehicle in for service immediately
