Can Hitch/Trailer Wiring Installation on 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe Cause Back Up Camera to Malfunction

Question:

In August I installed a Curt CU94FR T-connector Vehicle Harness W/4-pole Flat Connector and an Etrailer Trailer Hitch Receiver - Class III – 2”, on my 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe without factory trailer package. It currently has about 15K miles, so I am concerned about maintaining the warranty. Yesterday my wife pointed out that the surround view camera display no longer has the yellow and red lines that show distance to other objects, or the arcs indicating front wheel direction. The image is not from my car but snipped online from a 2020 Sonata review. It’s not something I pay a lot of attention to, so I don’t know exactly when the lines went away. Also, Hyundai has a disclaimer for everything in their manual including non-factory options. I’m afraid if I take it to the dealer they’ll say it’s caused by the hitch. The back sensors the little round ones still work and alert when the car is too close to something, but that’s not part of the surround view system. The image below is from my car about to encounter a trash container. Finally, the questions: Is this a known problem? Will it correct itself if I remove the harness connector? How about if I remove the fuse? Should I have used a different wiring harness? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

I spoke with the folks at Curt about the issue you're experiencing. My contact in the technical services department tells me that since the proximity sensors are still working and since the camera is still functional, that it's extremely unlikely that the hitch or wiring harness installation caused the lines to disappear from the camera display. If the # CU94FR wiring or the # e98843 hitch was interfering somehow, those functions would very likely not work at all.

Some of the back up camera systems we offer actually have a feature that allows you to turn those proximity lines on or off, and it's very possible that a setting in your Hyundai camera system was inadvertently changed or switched off, which led to what you're experiencing.

You can test this theory by unplugging the # CU94FR harness, but I'm pretty certain that doing so won't change anything.
