Recommended Hitch for Rear of Fifth Wheel Camper for Bike Rack

Question:

I have a Keystone Cougar xlight 29 RBS fifth wheel. I was told the bumper will not support a bike rack. My question is, due you make a hitch that will attach to the frame of the trailer?

We do offer some frame mounted RV hitches, which you can see by clicking the provided link.

To determine which hitch would work best, you will need to measure the distance between your frame members, measured from the outside of one frame member to the outside of the other.

If this distance is between 47-71 inches, the Ultra-Fab # UF35-946403 would be my recommendation. There are a few things to be aware of when using an RV mounted hitch like this:

1) The hitch itself is rated for 350 lbs of tongue weight, but you might be limited by the capacity of the frame members you are attaching the hitch to. Your fifth wheel manufacturer would be a good resource for determining this.

2) The hitch is a universal fit item, so it will be up to the installer to determine a structurally safe location for attachment.

3) Make sure the bike rack used has been approved for use on the rear of a towed trailer. This is important because any accessory installed at the rear of a towed trailer will be subjected to more bouncing than what would be experienced if the rack was installed on a vehicle. Racks that are approved for use on RVs or trailers are designed to be stronger than racks used on passenger vehicles. I have linked you to a list of our RV and Motorhome-approved racks.

I really like the Swagman XP, which is available in a 3 bike model as # S64910-2 or a 4 bike model as part # S64940. The XP is ruggedly constructed, and would work great for you.

The Curt hitch you mentioned would work well, but the stipulations of the hitch warranty require the use of a stabilizing strap like part # 18050. Since there is typically no good place to attach a stabilizing strap on the rear of a fifth wheel, I would not recommend that hitch.
