How Are Trailer Hitches Weight Rated

Helpful Expert Reply:
The way a hitch is weight rated is first the hitch manufacturers design a hitch to fit the vehicle and then from there they design it to be as strong as possible while keeping in mind the towing capacity of the vehicle. Then they test the hitches to failure and set a capacity that is safe for it. But with that said the hitch is rated separately from the vehicle which is why the capacities can be rated differently. You do have to go by the lowest rated component in your setup though which could be vehicle if it happened to have a lower capacity listed.
