Troubleshooting Reese Breakaway Switch Battery Not Charging Correctly

Hi our Reece breakaway tow unit is not charging. With the battery disconnected I have 14 volts but once the battery is connected it s to 12 volts please let me know what you think Im considering bypassing the lid and going directly to battery thermals

Based on the issue you are describing it sounds like the charger built in to the lid of our Pro-Series/Reese Breakaway Kit # 50-85-315 has gone bad and that's why you are not getting the battery to charged.

I do not recommend connecting the wires directly to the battery terminals as with no charger there is nothing keeping the battery from being overcharged.

Instead I recommend I recommend replacing your setup with the # 50-85-315 so you get a new charger to make sure your breakaway battery stays fully charged just in case it is needed in the future.
