Does the Thule T2 Pro XTS # TH9035XTS Have Enough Weight Capacity for My Electric Bikes?

Question:

I have a Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer 1.25 Class I hitch purchased from etrailer installed on my 2018 Prius. We just purchased 2 eBikes Pedego Element @ 50lbs and Pedego Comfort Cruiser @ 51lbs and the dealer recommended the Thule T2 Pro XTS. We just purchased this rack on your site as it appeared to be able to fit our vehicle and bikes weight of bikes are just 1 pound over max. Will this work? Thanks.

I have an answer for you. Technically, we cannot recommend any bike rack to be used over the per-bike weight capacity or the combined weight capacity. The reason why is because the additional weight does have the potential to either damage the rack, the hitch receiver, or the vehicle itself. With the Thule T2 Pro XTS Bike Rack for 2 Bikes - 1-1/4" Hitches, even though the per-bike weight capacity is 60 pounds, the overall weight capacity rating is 100 pounds total. With the overall weight capacity, you are correct in determining that your bikes exceed the rating of the Thule T2 Pro XTS by 1 pound.

With that being said, you may be able to decrease the weight by removing the batteries of your e-bikes during transport. Here at etrailer, we always recommend our neighbors to remove the batteries to avoid any unnecessary damage. Also, if there are any other accessories on your electric bikes, you may be able to shed that additional pound by removing them during transport.

If you have already tried those options, there is always the option of returning the XTS for another rack. For this route, I recommend the Yakima HoldUp Bike Rack for 2 Bikes - 1-1/4" # Y02445. The HoldUp provides a maximum per-bike weight capacity of 60 pounds, so you will not have a problem with weight. In addition, the HoldUp will be compatible with the same 1-1/4 inch hitch that you utilize for the XTS.
