Clearance Question with 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Question:

I have a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 Texas addition and a 2010 Hartland Big Horn 3670RL with a MORryde Cushioned 5th Wheel Pin Box. I am currently using a Demco Hijacker Autoslide 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ Slider - Single Jaw - Above Bed - 18,000 lbs - Item # DM8550034. I love the slider hitch, but it is really heavy. The Demco Recon 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch - Single Jaw - Above Bed - 21,000 lbs - Item # DM8550043 is way lighter and would be much easier for me to take in and out. I am very interested in this hitch. Would I have enough clearances to use this hitch with my current setup safely?

I doubt the Demco Recon 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch, # DM8550043 will provide the needed clearance for turning with your 6-1/2 foot bed. Without witnessing your arrangement in a turn I can not state that for certain, but for most short bed trucks it is an issue which is why the slide hitch has been developed. Do you have the ability to use a hoist or other style lifting device when removing the hitch? Would the Demco 5th Wheel Lifting Bracket, # DM6100, be of value to you? Please review the attached video I linked.

Another option to consider would be to use the replacement trailer pin box called a Sidewinder along with the Demco Recon, # DM8550043. Sidewinders move the trailer pivot point 22-inches back from the king pin, to the rotating turret assembly at the end nearest to the trailer's mounting wings. The two linked articles on 5th wheel towing with short-bed trucks will be helpful. If you go this route you will also need a wedge kit. The # RP74FR is the Sidewinder Wedge Kit for B&W, Demco, and Husky Fifth Wheel Trailer Hitches.
