Can Curt C65500 Flat Plate Gooseneck Hitch Be Installed Behind Truck's Rear Axle  

Question:

Customer came in with New Chev Silverado 1500, and had a curt 65500 flat plate installed ,, we noticed the ball was about 6inch behind the center of the axle,, we mentioned that we did not think it was properly positioned, what is your recommendation

I'd wholeheartedly agree with you. A gooseneck or 5th wheel hitch shouldn't be installed any further to the rear than the centerline of the rear axle. Placing the trailer's pin weight behind the rear axle can make the rear axle act like a fulcrum, removing weight from the front vehicle axle which can negatively affect steering and braking response. Since the front brakes of a vehicle will typically provide 75% or so of the braking, removing any downforce from the front axle can lead to a dangerous situation. It can also cause the vehicle headlights to be improperly aimed by making them point upward.
