Troubleshooting Trailer Brake Error On 2018 Toyota Tundra After Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Is Installed

Question:

I have a 2018 Tundra and just had a shop hard wire in a Tekonsha P3 and there was no error message when I left but I was playing with the manual brake lever on the P3 and now have a message that says “trailer brake error”. Do you know how to get rid of this message? Did I get the message just because I was playing with the manual lever? Do other people have the Tekonsha P3 on a 2018 or later Tundra? Any problems or does it work good and without error messages? I had an integrated controller from the factory Thanks!

It sounds like the installer unplugged the OEM controller on your 2018 Toyota Tundra when they installed the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195 but did not flash the computer to disable the controller, and your truck is thinking there is an error due to not detecting the factory controller.

When the integrated controller is removed the dealer will need to flash the truck to disable the error codes.

It is possible the # 90195 will still work with the error code, but I am not sure if the error code disables the power to the brakes or not.

I recommend having the computer flashed before towing a trailer that has brakes.

I included a video of the # 90195 for you to take a look at.
