Parts Needed For Flat Towing 2001 Jeep Cherokee Behind Motorhome

Question:

I own a 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4 door 4x4 with a 4.0L 6 cylinder and automatic transmission. Is my vehicle able to be flat towed safely? I see the needed products for my vehicle online but I wanted to confirm that my vehicle was alright to be flat towed. Typically it would be towed behind our class a motorhome but would it be safe to tow behind a 1/2 ton truck? Thanks

In my research, I found several references that stated if your 4 x 4 2001 Jeep Cherokee has a neutral position in the transfer case it can be flat towed. The only caveats I was able to find in the forums was that folks recommend starting the Cherokee at every fuel, food or rest stop and letting it run for 5 minutes or so. I was unable to find an online copy of the owner's manual to confirm, so you might want to check with your Jeep dealer.

To flat tow your Cherokee, you'll need a tow bar like the Roadmaster Falcon All Terrain, part # RM-522, base plates like part # 1418-1 and # RM-643, a taillight wiring harness like # RM-15267, a supplemental braking system like the Blue Ox # BLU37TR and possibly a high/low adatper if the installed height difference between the base plates and the vehicle you're towing the Cherokee with is greater than 3 inches.

I've linked to our selection of high/low adapters, an article that shows you how to measure to see if you need one and to install videos for the base plates and a similar wiring harness to the one I recommended.

As long as the weight of the Jeep doesn't exceed the towing capacity of the 1/2 ton truck, you'll be just fine towing with that vehicle as well, but be sure to use a supplemental braking system.
