Best Weight Distribution System to Use when Testing Out Multiple Travel Trailers

Question:

Since there is going to be a variety of trailers, getting something that will fit all of the applications is difficult. Don't worry, though. We have you covered. The best one for you is going to be the Fastway e2 Weight Distribution System, part # FA92-00-0800. This one can support tongue weights from 400 - 800 pounds. Going up to 800 pounds is important because once you load the trailer of those 600-pound tongue weight ones, the tongue weight will go up. You may even be able to load that extra gear of yours in the trailer so long as the tongue weight doesn't exceed 800 pounds. The e2 allows backing up and has 2-point sway control while also featuring a fairly easy assembly. You will need hitch balls to complete the setup. I recommend getting both a 2" ball, part # A-90, and a 2-5/16" ball, part # A-6, since the required ball will be one of those two on each trailer. If you already have your brake controller figured out (the Curt Echo, part # C51180, is a fantastic one), then there are only 2 other pieces that I would recommend to ensure you are caught wishing you already had them. The first is tongue scale so you can ensure that each new trailer is loaded to fit within the e2's 400 - 800-pound range. I recommend the etrailer Tongue Weight Scale for Campers and Utility Trailers, part # e99044. It has a maximum capacity of 2000 pounds, so it will easily measure your 400 - 800-pound tongue weights. The second is a substitute shank for your e2 WD system. Since there will be a variety of trailers, there will be a variety of coupler heights. To ensure you can accommodate the best range, I recommend the Curt Weight Distribution Shank, part # C17121. It provides a 5" drop and 11-1/4" rise, so it should be able to handle any of the coupler heights you come across. I've linked to video reviews of each of these parts below.

I assume you are looking at the Fastway e2 rated at 1200 pounds, part # FA92-00-1200. While this may seem at first glance to be a better option because of the higher number, there is something tricky that happens with WD systems. That is the fact that it takes a certain amount of weight to activate them correctly. With the 1200 pound e2 here, it may be able to handle tongue weights up to 1200 pounds, but it's range is 800 - 1200. This means that any tongue weight under 800 pounds will not be enough to engage the system freely, causing the ride to be very stiff and rigid. With those 400 - 600 pound tongue weight trailers you wanted to rent, this particular WD system will be more of a hindrance (i.e. it will cause your ride to be so stiff and rigid that it will make controller the trailer harder than without it, which would be a waste of money for you). I recommend sticking with the 800-pound one from the earlier answer, part # FA92-00-0800.
