Recommended Axles And Electric Trailer Brake Components For Custom 50 Wide Tandem Axle Trailer

Question:

Hi, I am fabricating a 50 wide trailer with tandem 2000lb axles. I was wondering if you could send me a quote for a kit that would include the axles one idler, one with electric brakes, 4 15 radial wheels white wall tires if available. Leaf springs, hardware for an overslung configuration. Thank you

I would be happy to help.

The closest 2000lb trailer axle we offer for your 50" wide trailer is the 60" Dexter Trailer Axle Beam with Standard Spindles # T20BTR-6048, but this would only give you roughly 3/4" of frame clearance when used the narrowest 15" wheels we offer which is the Kenda Karrier ST205/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire with 15" Black Mod Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - LR C # AM32238B. It is recommended to have at least 1-1/2" clearance between the trailer frame and the tire so I have another option.

Instead I recommend the Timbren Heavy-Duty Axle-Less Trailer Suspension # ASR2KHDS01 which has the 2000lb axle rating you are looking for, but will work with any width trailer. Since the # ASR2KHDS01 has a built in AEON progressive-rate main spring you will not need leaf springs or any other suspension hardware.

To complete the Electric Trailer Brake installation I recommend the following parts:

Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly # AKHD-545-35-EZ-K
Trailer Idler Hub Assembly # AKIHUB-545-35-G-EZ-K
Electric Trailer Brake Kit # AKEBRK-35-SA

Since you are only wanting one set of trailer brakes, I recommend putting them on the front assembly as typically tandem axle trailers have 60% of their load on the front axle, and 40% on the rear axle.

While you didn't mention needing wiring to activate your new electric trailer brakes I recommend the Trailer Wiring 7-Way Upgrade Kit w/ Junction Box # HS381-9000 which will give you the 7-way connector needed to plug into your vehicle, but will also give you a nice junction box to make all of your wiring connections. You will also need 10 Gauge Wire # 10-1-1 to go from the junction box to the electric trailer brake assemblies, and using Heat Shrink Butt Connectors # DW05745-5 will provide a weather tight connection.

Lastly for 15" wheels with radial tires I recommend the # AM32238B which has a black wheel, or # AM32395 which has a white wheel. Both of these wheels use the 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern which is what the idler hub and hub and drum assemblies mentioned have.

You will be able to find the most up-to-date prices for all of the products mentioned on the product pages right above the add to cart button.

I included videos for each of the products mentioned, and a link to a helpful article on adding electric trailer brakes for you to take a look at.
