Replacing Electric Brake Assemblies & Hub Seals on Haulmark Sport Lite 2-Axle Trailer
Question:
I own a Haulmark Sport Lite tandem axle enclosed trailer with electric brakes to both axles. At this point, I know that I need to replace the brake assembly on the front, left side of the trailer. 2 questions: 1-The brake assembly needing replacement is the first to receive power from the truck. Would the the other 3 brakes stop working if the first one is shot? 2-Will I need to replace brake hub seals when installing new brake assemblies? Thanks

We generally recommend replacing brake assemblies on both ends of the same axle at the same time.
If wired correctly both brakes on a given axle should tend to wear fairly evenly. Just because the initial electrical braking signal reaches one wheel on the axle before the other there should not be very different wear between the two.
If the front/left brake was damaged due to a dead short, then all brakes will cease to function as they are all on a common circuit. The other three brakes may still be okay but they will not function until the short is corrected.
Uneven braking force and wear could occur if there were a short in the wiring to any of the other 3 brake assemblies. This would mean that the brake(s) with the (partial or dead) short would apply less or no braking force and therefore show potentially less wear on its brake pads. Also, if a short caused damage to one of the brake magnets this could result in uneven braking force and therefore uneven pad wear. I have included an article covering the procedures for testing electric brake magnets that might be useful to you.
Hub seals, inner and outer bearings, races and spindles all should be checked at least annually. Bearings should be packed with grease at last one a year or every 12,000 miles, whichever comes first. Although it does not automatically follow that replacement of brake assemblies conclusively means a need to replace hub seals or other mechanical axle components this is the case more often than not. If you are going to go to the effort of replacing a brake assembly we recommend going through the additional steps of inspecting and at least repacking your bearings. I have included a link to a second article that covers this topic.
