Changing SKS Lock Cores on Yakima SkyBox Roof-Mounted Cargo Box

Question:

I have the skybox and two replacement cores. the instructions tell me to opent the locks and then remove the old core with the Control Key but when the locks are open the key is captive and so i need to know how to get the key out of the core in the open position or how other wise to replace the cores.

I gave Yakima a call, and was told that if the key is turned midway between the lock and unlock position, it can then be removed. At that point, you would then insert the control key and remove and replace the lock core as desired.

Check out the helpful link I attached to be taken to a page where a video on how to do this was made.

Different issue. I lost the key to my skybox and when the locksmith tried to pick it, the whole lock core came out. Now the box is shut and locked with no lock core. I can access the interior of the box from the other side. Can I replace the latch assembly without first “unlocking” the side that’s locked?

You should be able to remove the original latch handle and then use one of the replacements, part # Y8880348, to unlock that side of your box. Here is an answer page where one of our guys reached out to Yakima about this.
