Question:
Can/should I heat these connectors for a waterproof seal? Or should I do something else?

I have a solution for you, but the # 05731-5 are not heat shrink style butt connectors, so heating them isn't going to provide any protection. Instead I recommend using the Deka Heat Shrink Butt Connector - 16-14 Gauge - Nylon Insulation - Blue - Qty 5 # DW05744-5, which can be heated up to provide some insulation from the elements.
This would be the best solution it sounds like and would be my recommendation.
