Brake Controller Option for 2020 Volvo XC90 With Factory 7-way Trailer Connector
Question:
Is a brake controller needed to tow up to the vehicle tow limit 5000 lbs for a 2020 Volvo XC90 WITH a factory installed 7 way plug? All your products refer to without factory installed.

The owner's manual of your 2020 Volvo XC90 states that the towing capacity for an un-braked trailer is 1650 lbs. With trailer brakes, the capacity for FWD vehicles is 4000 lbs and 5000 lbs for AWD vehicles. For safety's sake, if your trailer or camper is equipped with trailer brakes you really should use them.
I can't find any reference for a factory 7-way on a Volvo XC90, so I have a suspicion that your 7-way might actually be dealer installed rather than a factory added option which is no big deal because we have the perfect option for you.
As long as the 12-volt power feed in the 1:00 position on the 7-way trailer connector is functional (which you can check using a # PTW2993 tester with the ignition on), and as long as you have a smartphone, the Curt # C51180 Echo Wireless Brake Controller offers a simple plug and play install that would work perfectly for you. The unit plugs inline between the vehicle and the trailer and would use your smartphone as the controls. This system works very well and wouldn't require you to drill holes in the dash of your XC90 in order to complete the install like a typical brake controller would.
I'll link you to a product video that explains in more detail how the Echo works.
