Best Bike Rack for 4 Bikes on 2020 Toyota Highlander Hitch

Question:

Hi, I just realized that pinhole in the OEM toyota hitch is pretty shallow 1.5 :, and it wont fit any thule racks. What you guys generally recommend? Any good 4-bike rack that would fit? Or alternatively can you recommend an adapter to extend and make this pin hole distance reasonable for Thule/Yakima racks? Thank you! Evgeny

Yes the factory Toyota hitches have issues with Thule bike racks but I have a couple options that will work.

The Yakima HoldUp 4 Bike Rack # Y02443-2 fits your 2020 Toyota Highlander. This is a well built wheel mount bike rack which means no frame contact on your bikes. Compared to a frame mount or hanging design it can more easily accommodate women's, kids and alternative style frames. You can tilt the bike rack away from the vehicle with bikes loaded to gain access to your hatch. The included hitch lock secures the rack to your Highlander and it is keyed alike to the individual cable locks for each bike. When not in use the rack folds up pretty compact compared to other 4-bike platform racks.

As much as I like wheel mount bike racks they don't work with bikes that have fenders. If you have bikes with fenders I would consider the Saris Freedom 4 Bike Platform Rack # SA4414B. This is a frame mount design that shares similar features as the HoldUp. It can tilt with bikes loaded, fold up when not in use and comes with an anti-rattle hitch pin. It does not come with locks. If you choose the Saris Freedom, I recommend locks # SA3022 and # SA 981.
The Yakima RidgeBack 4 Bike Rack # Y02458 is a hanging style bike rack that comes with a lot of features at a friendlier price compared to the platform styles. This comes with a keyed alike anti-rattle bolt lock. It can be tilted away with bikes unloaded to gain access to your hatch. You may need to use the Top Tube Adapter Bar with this rack too. Sometimes the drastic downward angle of the top tube causes your bike to not sit even on the rack.

One thing to keep in mind is if you have a carbon fiber bike we recommend using a wheel mounted platform style rack to avoid stress on the frame of your bike.

These are all great bike racks for a 2" factory Toyota hitch. As much as I like Thule bike racks using a hitch extender drastically reduces your hitches capacity. Keeping a high capacity on your hitch especially with a rack with 4 bikes is important.
