Weight Distribution With Sway Control Set Up for a Pole Tongue Trailer
Question:
Hi. I have a 2018 Hymer Touring GT travel trailer. It is build on a boat trailer chassis, with a pole tongue. It also has surge brakes. I wish to ad weight distribution and more importantly sway control. The Husky unit here seems like it would work, with the adapter for the tongue. Do you agree? My trailer has a 2inch ball. Im assuming the 2 5/16foot ball that comes with the unit can be switched out, correct? Im also assuming Ill have to replace the swing down jack/wheel with a straight jack in order to clear the torsion bars. Let me know if Im on the right track here, or if theres a better solution. Thanks very much Doug VP

Adding weight distribution to the pole tongue on your 2018 Hymer Touring GT travel trailer with a 3200 lb gross trailer weight rating and a 300 lb tongue weight requires a pole tongue adapter. The adapter allows you to use weight distribution by giving the arms somewhere to attach on the trailer side. I recommend the Blue Ox Pole Tongue Weight Distributing Hitch Adapter Item # BXW4023. It offers a 2000 lb max tongue weight and fits 2-3/4" to 4-1/2 inch tongue widths. It is also a steel construction with a black powder coat finish.
I also recommend Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution w/ Sway Control - Clamp On - 6,000 lbs GTW, 550 lbs TW Item # BXW0550. Sway is caused by your trailer moving off center from your vehicle. As the trailer moves off center to one side it pulls on the hitch ball causing that side of your vehicle to drop. By the time your suspension reacts the trailer is already off center from the vehicle. As the suspension forces the vehicle back up it pushes the trailer to the opposite side which creates the swaying motion of the trailer.
Since you will need the pole tongue adapter it requires a clamp on weight distribution hitch. This hitch will work perfectly for the weight of your trailer. It has sway control, allows backing which saves you the trouble of having to remove the trunnion spring bars when you want to back it into a spot, works on trailers with both electric and surge brakes, comes with the 2" shank. The Husky Center Line Weight Distribution w/ Sway Control - Trunnion - 12,000 lbs GTW, 1,200 lbs TW Item # HT32218 you referenced is not compatible with a pole tongue adapter.
Since your trailer coupler is a 2 inch I recommend 2" Hitch Ball - 1-1/4" Diameter x 2-5/8" Long Shank - Chrome - 10,000 Item # A-90.
