Can I Use the Curt Dual Hitch Adapter on my 2020 Chevy Traverse to Pull Camper and Haul Bikes
Question:
I own a 2020 Chevy Traverse with a dealer installed hitch. The Hitch part website indicates the following: Hitch Capacity,Trailer Weight Rating: 1500 lb. Specific to this vehicle Tongue Weight: 10-15 of trailer weight up to 500lb.. Use as weight carrying only When I look up literature for the 2020 chevy traverse, it states that the tow limit of the vehicle is 1500 lbs unless you have the two package which adds transmisison cooler, upgraded radiator, etc., and then the two limit increases to 5,000 lbs. Im towing a 1,000 lb popup camper so roughly 100 lb tongue weight, plus I want to add my Thule 4-bike rack on the upper receiver of the Curt D-192 adapter. If bike rack weighs 40 lbs, plus four bikes at 30 lbs each, bike rack with bikes will be 160 lbs. What hitch capacity do I need in order to use Curt D-192 to carry 1,000 popup trailer and 160 lbs of bikes and bike rack? Thanks in advance!

I have a solution for you, but the problem with using any type of hitch extender like the Curt Dual Hitch Adapter # D-192 is that they reduce the tongue weight of the hitch by 50%. It looks like the tongue weight capacity of the hitch that you've found is going to be 500-lbs, so using the # D-192 would bring it down to 250-lbs total. If you're carrying 160-lbs of bikes and rack, plus the tongue weight of the trailer, you're going to be over the tongue weight capacity.
Instead of using your existing bike rack, your best bet is going to be using something like the Swagman Original 4 Bike Towing Rack for 2" Trailer Hitches - Tilting # S64675 which will sit in between your vehicle and allow you to use the integrated ball mount to tow your trailer. I really love that this also tilts away from the vehicle to allow you to access the rear cargo area of the vehicle, and the integrated ball mount that will allow you to safely stay under the tongue weight restrictions that you'd otherwise encounter using the D-192.
If you really don't want to use a new bike rack, you could likely switch out the factory hitch to something like the Curt # CU29FR, which as long as your vehicle's tongue weight capacity was over 750-lbs could be used as a replacement and allow you to use the D-192. I do believe the new rack will be the most cost-effective solution in this case though.
I've linked a quick review video of this rack for you to have a look at, as well.
