What you experienced is called chucking, and is very common. This is typically caused by poor fit between the fifth wheel's king pin and the jaw system of the hitch you're using. To limit this back and forth banging motion, you'll preferably have a hitch will a single piece jaw like the Reese OEM # RP30918 you'd looked at.

An air ride pinbox like the Reese 5th Airborne can further improve your ride quality by providing an air bag suspension between the 5th wheel and the hitch. Air ride pin boxes are pinbox specific, so if you'd care to reply with the manufacturer and model number of your existing pin box (should be found on a sticker located somewhere on the pinbox), I'd be happy to make a recommendation.

I've linked to a help article that explains how the Fifth Airborne cushioned pinbox works.
