Question:
What do i need to do? What does this mean?

The DrawTite Activator 5100 referenced doesn't have a display as it only uses an LED indicator light. If you have a DrawTite Activator with an LED display, you probably have the discontinued 5504.
Assuming that is the case, the "Er" code indicates an internal short and the brake controller will need to be replaced. I have attached the user manual as well as a snip of the troubleshooting chart for you to reference.
A great replacement/upgrade at a similar price point is the Tekonsha # TK63VR. This is a proportional brake controller which aromatically applies the trailer brakes based on the deceleration of your tow vehicle. Because of this, proportional brake controllers help prevent wear on both your trailer's and tow vehicle's brakes. Another great thing is that it will plug right in to the same connection previously used for the old brake controller.
