Parts Needed to Add 7-Way and Brake Controller to 2019 Subaru Ascent Without Tow Package

Question:

I have a 2019 Subaru Ascent without the factory towing package. I ordered and installed the hitch and 4 pin wiring harness from you guys about a year ago and everything works great, but we are looking to get a camper and need the 7 prong plug and break controller. Would also like the ability to charge the trailer batteries while driving via the plug. What parts do I need to order? Thanks

There are just a couple parts needed in order for you to add a 7-way and brake controller to your 2019 Subaru Ascent.

Because you already have the required 4-way 118790, to add a wireless brake controller, which I strongly recommend due to how very easy they are to use, you'll just need the 7-Way RV Upgrade Kit for Trailer Brake Controller Installation # ETBC7L.

This will allow you to use the Curt Echo Wireless Trailer Brake Controller # C51180.

The Curt Echo will simply plug into the 7-way on the back of your Ascent with absolutely no additional wiring necessary. This means no bulky unit in your cab, saving you precious space and the hassle of having to drill under your dash to mount it. I have added links to video reviews of both the installation kit and Echo for you to check out.

As for your trailer batteries, you can only maintain and keep their charge via a 7-way by using 10 Gauge Wire # 10-1-1 from the 12 volt auxiliary terminal on the 7-Way connector on the trailer to the positive terminal on the trailer battery while grounding the negative terminal of the trailer battery to the trailer frame. In order to charge the battery from a totally discharged state you'll need a separate charger like the CTEK MULTI US 7002 12-Volt Universal Battery Charger # CTEK56353.
