Do Electric Brakes Disengage While In Reverse When Switching From Surge

Question:

I have a surge brake single axle 3500 lb boat trailer and Im considering converting to electric brakes using your kit # AKEBRK-35-SA. I drive a Chevy Silverado 1500 with an integrated brake controller. I just want to mention that I dont have any experience with brake controllers, yet. Anyway, the question is : what happens with this kit if I have to back up? Does it disengage?

In regards to reversing, you don't need any sort of lockout for electric brakes like you do for surge brakes. The brake magnets will not engage while reversing so you won't have any issues with this. The Electric Trailer Brake Kit part # AKEBRK-35-SA is a great option and will allow you to reuse your existing hubs/drums. That said, you'll also need the Trailer Wiring 7-Way Upgrade Kit w/ Junction Box part # HS381-9000 and Hopkins Engager Push-To-Test Trailer Breakaway Kit part # 20099.
