Is There a 5-Bike Rack for Trailer Hitch That Can Tilt with Bikes Loaded

Question:

I am looking for a 5 bike rack. We will be using this for longer trips so I want one that is able to tile away from the back hatch of a 2011 Sienna. In doing research it looks like the 5-bike racks do not allow you to tilt away while the rack is still loaded with bikes? Is this true? Not sure if you can advise on this but If i did load up one of the other racks would I in reality Im sure against recomendations be able to tilt the rack and then just muscle it back up afterwards?

Since you are wanting a 5 bike rack there are only a few options that can carry that many bikes. Unfortunately, none of them will tilt with the bikes loaded. It is just too much weight and the rack could fail with that leverage on them.

Of the 5-bike racks, I recommend the Yakima RidgeBack bike rack for 5 bikes # Y02459.

There are several 4 bike options that can swing out and tilt with bikes loaded but for the 5 bike racks we do not have one to recommend.

Check out the review video link I attached for more info as well.

I have a Ford F-150. Does the Saris Glide EX 5 safely allow for the tailgate to be open once the bike rack is extended? Also, for a 5 bike rack for a long road trip, do you typically recommend the Saris or the Thule Apex XT 5?

The Saris Glide # SA775 does offer the unique ability to tilt back with the bikes still loaded, but I highly doubt it's enough to create enough clearance for your tailgate. You'll still need to remove the rack itself to fully lower it on your F-150. You lose the tilting ability (with bikes still loaded) on the Thule Apex XT # TH9026XT but since you won't be able to lower the tailgate either way, I do recommend the Thule model. It offers wider cradles spacing for easier loading and also features a higher per-bike weight capacity (37.5 pounds compared to 30 pounds on the Saris Glide).
