Installing a 7-Way Trailer Connector on a 1999 Ford Explorer
Question:
Hi, Im about to install a brake controller on my 1999 Ford explorer. I have the factory trailer tow package with two 4 wires connectors one on each side at the back. I already used the left side for my 4 pins connector. Im gonna use the right side for the 7 pins connector, plus im gonna splice for the back-up lamps and route the blue wire from the brake controller. Do I absolutly have to wire the 12V black/red? I dont have a trailer, so all the times Im gonna use this connector it will be with a rental trailer. Is that wire useful? If its better to wire it, should it take it directly from the battery? What should be the fuse size? What wire guage? thanks a lot for the informations,

Many people find that 12 Volt circuit helpful for keeping a trailer battery charged, for a break away system, or for powering accessories on the trailer but it is not absolutely necessary. I would go ahead and wire it up, better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. You would want to use a minimum of 12 gauge wire and run it to the positive battery terminal via a 40 amp inline circuit breaker, part number 9510. I'll include a link for the breaker which you can find below.
