Parts Needed to Add 7-Way for Towing Tear Trailer With 2018 Kia Sportage

Question:

Good morning, I have a question about the type of writing I should buy for my 2018 Kia Sportage. I bought a tear camper trailer that have a 7 Pole terminal because of the brakes on the trailer. Which product do you recommend that will fit the Sportage? Im new at this and was confused about what to buy. Thank you for your advice.

To add a 7-Way to your 2018 Kia Sportage you'll need to start off with a 4-Way flat which carries the basic trailer light functions. For that I recommend the Tekonsha T-One # 118698 simply because we have found the T-One harnesses to be the best. This tees in behind your tail lights and then draws power straight from your battery to power the trailer lights.

The next step is to add the 7-Way wiring to the 4-Way flat. The kit you need for this will depend on what type of brake controller you plan on using. If you want minimal installation steps then the Curt Echo # C51180 can be installed by simply connecting the Upgrade Kit # ETBC7L to the 4-Way and then routing power to your battery. This is a new controller that connects to an Apple or Android smart phone and allows you to adjust settings that way instead of having to run wires into the cab of your vehicle.

For a more traditional brake controller like the Prodigy P3 # 90195 you need the Universal Wiring Kit # ETBC7. This option does require wiring be ran to the battery as well as instide your Sportage but it also means you have one dedicated device to the brakes of your trailer.

I have attached sample installation and review videos for each that you can check out.

If you don't already have a trailer hitch then I recommend the etrailer # e72TR because it has a hidden crosstube.

To complete a towing setup you also need a ball mount kit. I recommend checking out Ball Mount Kit # 989900 because it includes two ball mounts, one with a 3/4” rise/2” drop and the other with a 2-3/4” rise/4” drop, a 1-7/8” hitch ball, a 2” hitch ball, and a pin and clip. You will want to refer to the attached ball mount article to ensure that this kit is correct for your towing application.
