From what you are describing, it sounds like we're dealing with a short on the brake circuit. The "P.L." code is displayed when the P2 # 90885 senses a power interruption while the brake pedal is depressed. A solid ".c." for electric brakes or ".C." for electric over hydraulic brakes, indicates the trailer is connected, so the fact that it was flashing reassures us the connection is not solid.
I would start by checking your trailer connector. Disconnect the trailer and clean any dirt or debris on both the vehicle and trailer connector. Always make sure to use dielectric grease # 11755 for all electrical connections. Next, check for any bent, damaged, or corroded pins. You can use # A10-7072VP to replace the connector on most factory 7-way harnesses.
Behind the connector, check the brake wire (see diagram) as well as the ground wire and repair or replace if they are damaged or frayed. A 7-way tester, like # PK12741 is the quickest and easiest way to determine all functions are working properly on the vehicle end.
I've attached a comprehensive article on Troubleshooting Brake Controller Installations for you at the bottom of the page as well.
