Is Separate 20 Amp Fuse Required When Installing Brake Controller on 2018 GMC Canyon

Question:

I purchased a Tekonsha controller along with a 20amp fuse because the product details say its required if custom vehicle harness is not available. My truck does have the taped up wires under the dash but not custom harness plug. The fuse box has a 30amp fuse in F24 identified as trailer. Does this mean I do NOT need to find a place to install the inline fuse? To clarify, the vehicle does have a factory 7 pin trailer plug installed.

Since your 2018 GMC Canyon already has the needed brake controller wiring ran up under the dash (which indicates that you have the factory tow package), a separate 20 amp fuse isn't needed when hooking up a brake controller like the Tekonsha Primus IQ # TK90160. As you mentioned, a 30 amp fuse is already installed in-line on the truck for this protection.

The pigtail wiring from the controller will splice directly to the wiring under the dash. On the brake controller the blue wire is for brake output, the red wire is for brake signal input, the black wire is for 12V power, and the white wire is for ground. If the wiring on your Canyon isn't labeled, you will want to test each for function before making your connections.
