Hitch and Bike Rack Setup for 2008 Volkswagen Eos for Heavier Bikes
Question:
Good morning, I’m looking for a receiver hitch for the above vehicle. Additionally I have a 2” receiver bike rack. Total weight of the bikes and bike rack is 150 lbs. It looks like the receiver hitch is only available in 1 1/4”. What is your recommended solution for the receiver hitch and the 1 1/4” - 2” receiver adapter? Best Regards,

The best solution we have is going to be a 1-1/4 inch hitch like the Draw Tite part # 24824 with a new bike rack as there isn't a 2 inch hitch that fits your 2008 Volkswagen Eos and the use of a hitch adapter cuts the hitch capacity in half plus adds movement so that's not recommended. In general 2 inch hitches are only used on vehicles with higher towing capacities like trucks and SUVs.
Sounds like your bikes might be heavier due to the weight you mentioned, so for a bike rack with a higher weight capacity that fits this hitch size we have the Thule T2 Pro XTR # TH23JV which has a 100 lb weight capacity. This is a platform rack that's very easy to use/install and is also very stable. However, the Curt # C1190 only has a 100 pound tongue weight capacity. The weight of the carrier plus the combined weight of up to 2 bikes would have to be at or below the 100 pounds.
The best solution would be to use the Curt hitch to pull a small trailer to transport your bikes. The Hitch has a 1000 pound towing capacity. Please check with your owner's manual to determine the towing capacity of your Eos.
