Recommended 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch and Air Bags For 2019 Ford F-150 4WD With 5-1/2 Foot Bed

Question:

I have a 2019 Ford F-150 4wd with a 5-1/2 foot bed and I want to tow a fifth wheel trailer. I know I will need a side winder on the trailer side because of the short bed but what else do I need? I would also like to add suspension enhancement air bags I asked the dealership and the fifth wheel trailer has a 1621HD pin box

You are correct that the tow a fifth wheel trailer with your 2019 Ford F-150 5-1/2 foot bed you will need a fixed fifth wheel hitch and a side winder pin box.

For the fifth wheel hitch, I recommend the Reese M5 Fifth wheel hitch part # RP30928 with the custom install fifth wheel rails for the bed part # RP50087-58. The M5 has 20K capacity and 3" of height adjustment for bed rail clearance. The wraparound design of the jaw provides increased security compared to the other hitches with 2 piece jaws because it is a stronger connection with the king pin of the Sidewinder. I have contacted Reese before and they recommend the M5 for the Sidewinder as well. I have attached an installation video for your reference. You will be able to use the universal wedge that comes with the Sidewinder with the M5.

Since your fifth wheel trailer has a 1621HD pin box now, you can use Sidewinder 5th Wheel King Pin with Rotating Turret part # RP34FR which will bolt up to the trailer to replace the existing pin box perfectly. The sidewinder moves the pivot point back 22" so you can make sharp turns with the short bed truck without knocking out the back window of your cab.

For the air bags I recommend Air Lift LoadLifter 5000 Air Helper Springs part # AL57385 which are compatible with an in-bed hitch. They provide 5,000 lbs of load leveling support and can be adjusted from 5 psi- 100 psi. The Air Lift bags are designed with a roll plate on both ends of the bag to avoid puncture from moving parts under the truck or flying debris.

I highly recommend to install an Air Lift WirelessONE Compressor System part # AL25980 so you don't have to carry around a bulky compressor in the truck or stop at a gas station each time you need to air up the bags. You have the option to use your smartphone to control the air bags via Bluetooth or you can simply use the included remote.
