How to Tow 5th Wheel Trailer with MorRyde Orbital Pin Box with 2020 Silverado and Gooseneck Hitch

Question:

2020 Silverado 3500HD 79,44 inch bed length with a BandW #1020 goose ball, bed rails are 59 inches. Looking to purchase 2020 Jayco that has a Morryde orbital pin box. Pullrite says their 3900 and 2600 will work but the Orbital needs to be locked so it wont turn. sort of defeats the major benefit of the pin box with a shorter bed. Cant change the Morryde pin box since the 5th wheel frame is designed different to fit the morryde. Any suggestions on what would work or should I find a 5th wheel with a conventional pin box and get a reese goose box

I definitely have some great options for you however, as you mentioned in your question, the only way to use any kind of gooseneck to 5th wheel adapter like the PullRite units you were looking at or the similar (but superior in my opinion) Demco Recon # DM8550045 will be to lock out that MorRyde Orbital Pin Box.

This is simply because when you're dealing with a rotating pin box there has to be more than one attachment point to the truck's frame with regards to the hitch assembly. Otherwise there's just going to be too much stress put on the hitch and it could lead to damage down the road.

Now one thing I would keep in mind if you really like the Jayco trailer you're considering is that you may not need the additional cab clearance the pivoting pin box gives you, even with the short bed. The new generation GM trucks have a slightly longer "short bed" than previous generations and if the Jayco trailer has a tapered nose, I don't think you will really have an issue making sharper turns with the pin box locked out.

This would allow you to keep everything as-is on your setup with the addition of an in-bed adapter like the mentioned Demco Recon # DM8550045. The Recon sports a better jaw design with its wraparound single-piece construction and 3/4" thick steel locking bar that not only provides an extremely secure connection with the trailer but also creates a really smooth, quiet ride during travel.

Otherwise your best option will indeed be to go with a different trailer that's equipped with a standard pin box. Your options at that point would be much more numerous. A Reese Goose Box like # RP85FR that you mentioned (which is designed to replace the Lippert 1621, 1621HD, and 0719 pin box) is a great solution, or you could even go with the B&W Companion Slider # BWRVK3400-5W which is specifically designed to mount to the Turnoverball gooseneck hole you already have on your truck. This is one of the best 5th wheel hitches on the market and its 12" slider travel will give you all the cab clearance you need.

I have attached a few video demonstrations on these products that you can check out as well.
